Edward Sutton, who lived from about 1460 to 1531, was an important English nobleman. He became a Knight of the Garter when King Henry VIII first became king. From 1525 to 1528, he worked for Princess Mary, who later became Queen Mary I.

Early Life of Edward Sutton

Edward Sutton was the oldest son of Sir Edmund Sutton and Joyce de Tiptoft. His mother, Joyce, inherited important lands and titles. These included the Tibetot barony and the Cherleton barony.

Edward had several notable relatives. His uncle, John Sutton Dudley, was a Knight. His first cousin was Edmund Dudley, who was an important minister for King Henry VII. Edmund Dudley was also the father of John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland. Another of Edward's uncles was William Dudley, who was a Bishop of Durham. Edward's aunt, Eleanor Dudley, married Sir Henry Beaumont.

Becoming a Baron

In 1487, Edward Sutton's grandfather, John Sutton, 1st Baron Dudley, passed away. Edward then inherited the title of Baron Dudley. This title had been created for his grandfather in 1440. His grandfather had also served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland before that.

Edward's Family Life

Edward Sutton married Cecily Willoughby. She was the daughter of Sir William Willoughby. Together, Edward and Cecily had many children.

Grandchildren of Edward Sutton

Through his daughter Joyce's first marriage, Edward was the grandfather of Sir Edward Leighton. Edward Leighton was a local official for Shropshire. He was also the grandfather of Sir Thomas Leighton. Sir Thomas Leighton was the Governor of Jersey and married Elizabeth Knollys.

Through his daughter Jane, Edward was the grandfather of Thomas Fiennes, 9th Baron Dacre.
