Edward H. Tarr (born June 15, 1936 – died March 24, 2020) was an amazing American trumpet player. He was also a music historian, someone who studies music deeply. Edward Tarr helped bring back old ways of playing the trumpet from the Baroque and Romantic periods. He was a true pioneer in this field.

Who Was Edward Tarr?

Edward Tarr was born in Norwich, Connecticut, in the United States. He became famous for his incredible trumpet playing. He also studied music history very carefully.

His Early Life and Studies

Edward Tarr learned from some of the best trumpet players. In 1953, he studied with Roger Voisin from the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Later, in 1958–1959, he learned from Adolph Herseth of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He also studied music history in Basel, Switzerland, from 1959 to 1964.

Bringing Back Old Music

Edward Tarr loved old music. He helped create a full collection of trumpet pieces by Giuseppe Torelli. Torelli was an Italian composer from the Baroque period. Tarr played music from the Baroque, Classical, and even modern times. Some composers, like Mauricio Kagel, even wrote new music just for him!

The Edward Tarr Brass Ensemble

Edward Tarr loved to share his knowledge. He taught trumpet at the Rheinische Musikschule in Cologne, Germany. From 1985 to 2004, he was the director of the Trumpet Museum in Bad Säckingen, Germany. Edward Tarr recorded over 100 musical works. He started his recording career around 1960. He played with the Münchener Bach-Orchester, led by Karl Richter. His recordings can be found on many different music labels.
