Edward Thompson Dickson was a British Army officer. He was born on July 16, 1850, and passed away on August 23, 1938. He became a Major general and led two important army groups called Territorial Force divisions before World War I.

Edward Thompson Dickson's Army Life

Edward Thompson Dickson was born in St. Helier, Jersey. His father was also a Major-General. Edward went to Cheltenham College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. These are famous schools for training army officers.

Starting His Military Career

In 1869, Edward joined the army as an officer. He was part of the 49th Regiment of Foot. Later, in 1881, his regiment joined with another. It became known as the Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment).

Action in Sudan

In 1885, Edward took part in the Suakin Expedition. This was a military operation in Sudan. He fought in several battles, including Suakin, Hasheen, Tofrek, and Ginnis. His bravery led to him being named a "brigade-major." This is an important role on a general's staff.

Leading Regiments and Divisions

From 1891 to 1895, Edward commanded the 1st Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He was promoted to colonel in 1895. He then led the 49th Regimental District, which was based in Reading, Berkshire.

Later, he was sent to Barbados to command troops in the West Indies. In 1905, he became the General Officer Commanding the forces in West Africa.

Returning to England

Edward returned to England in 1906. He worked in administration for the army's Eastern Command. In 1908, he took charge of the new West Lancashire Division. This was part of the Territorial Force, a volunteer army group.

In 1909, he also commanded the Home Counties Division. He stayed in this role until 1912, when he retired from the army. He then moved to Tunbridge Wells.

Family Life

Edward Thompson Dickson married Helene Frances Harvey in 1878. They had one daughter together.
