Early Life and Education

Edward Wingate was the son of another Edward Wingate. His family came from places like Harlington in Bedfordshire and Lockleys in Hertfordshire.

When he was a young man, Edward went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1623. This is a famous university in England. Later, in 1626, he also joined Gray's Inn, which was a place where people studied to become lawyers.

A Time of Change: The English Civil War

The 1640s were a difficult time in England. The country was divided by the English Civil War. This war was fought between those who supported King Charles I and those who supported the Parliament. Edward Wingate chose to support the Parliament, who were also known as the Roundheads.

Edward Wingate in Parliament

In November 1640, Edward Wingate was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the town of St Albans. This meant he represented the people of St Albans in the Long Parliament, which was the name for the Parliament at that time.

He served as a Member of Parliament until 1648. His time in Parliament ended when some members were removed from their positions.

Later Life and Family

Edward Wingate lived at Lockleys in Hertfordshire. He passed away in August 1685 when he was about 79 years old. He was buried in Welwyn, Hertfordshire.

Edward Wingate was married to Mary Allway. Her father was Ralph Allway. Edward and Mary had a son, also named Edward, who took over the family after his father's death.
