Edwin Carewe (born Jay John Fox; March 3, 1883 – January 22, 1940) was a talented American filmmaker. He worked as a director, actor, producer, and writer in the early days of movies. Edwin was born in Gainesville, Texas.

Edwin Carewe's Career in Movies

After studying briefly at the Universities of Texas and Missouri, Edwin Carewe started working with local theater groups. In 1910, he moved to New York City. There, he joined the Dearborn Stock Company as an actor. His birth name was Jay Fox, but he chose the stage name Edwin Carewe. He picked "Edwin" from a famous actor named Edwin Booth. He got "Carewe" from a character he was playing.

From Actor to Director

Carewe first worked as an actor on stage. Later, he began directing films for several big studios. These included MGM, First National, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and United Artists.

He helped many actors become famous early in their careers. Some of these stars were Dolores del Río, Warner Baxter, Francis X. Bushman, and Gary Cooper.

Important Films

Edwin Carewe directed 58 films. One of his most famous was the 1928 movie Ramona. It starred Dolores del Río and Warner Baxter. This film was later found and fixed up by the Library of Congress. It was shown again for the first time in 2014 at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Another important film was Evangeline in 1929. This movie also starred Dolores del Río. Edwin's brother, Finis Fox, wrote the script. Evangeline was based on a famous poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. People praised the movie for its amazing lighting and camera work.

Family and Later Career

Edwin Carewe and his two brothers were also involved in filmmaking. His brother Wallace Fox was a director and producer. His other brother, Finis Fox, was a writer. All three brothers were registered as members of the Chickasaw tribe.

Carewe made many successful silent films. However, he found it hard to switch to making movies with sound. He tried remaking his old silent films with sound. Later, he made movies with smaller budgets and religious themes. His last film was Are We Civilized? in 1934.

Family Life

Edwin Carewe was married three times. He married actress Mary Akin twice. With his first wife, Mary Jane Croft, he had two daughters: Violette (who became an actress known as "Rita Carewe") and Mary Jane. With his first marriage to Mary Akin, he had two children: Sally Ann and William. With his second marriage to Mary Akin, they had one more child, Carol Lee.

Death

Edwin Carewe died from a heart problem in his apartment in Hollywood. He is buried at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
