Exploring Egg Harbor's Landscape
Egg Harbor is a large area, covering about 102.9 square miles (266.5 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 64%, is water! The land part is about 36.6 square miles (94.7 square kilometers).
Cool Rock Formations: Niagara Escarpment
You can see cool rock formations called "limestone outcroppings" in different spots around the town. These are part of something huge called the Niagara Escarpment. It's like a long cliff or ridge of rock that stretches across many places, including the Bayshore Blufflands State Natural Area in Egg Harbor.
Hidden Wonders: Horseshoe Bay Cave
Inside Frank E. Murphy County Park, on the western side of town, you'll find the entrance to Horseshoe Bay Cave. This cave is the second-longest cave in Wisconsin! It's a natural, undeveloped cave, which means it's still very wild and untouched.
Bats in the Cave
Horseshoe Bay Cave is a special home for bats. From about August 15 to October 1, bats gather here in large groups, which is called a "fall swarm." Then, from October 1 to May 15, they go into "hibernation," which is like a long sleep for the winter.
Protecting the Bats
Sadly, a disease called White-nose syndrome caused many bats in the cave to get sick. In 2015, there were about 1,100 bats, but by 2019, only 24 were left. This disease made the bat population drop a lot. Before the disease, this cave was the biggest "bat hibernaculum" (a place where bats hibernate) in Wisconsin, with 1,000 to 1,500 bats in winter. Good news! In March 2022, the number of bats went up to 44. However, two types of bats that used to live there haven't returned yet.
