Building the Eiffel Bridge
The Eiffel Bridge was built in 1897. A rich nobleman named Don Julio Quesada-Cañaveral asked for it to be built. He wanted to connect the train station in Íllora to two important factories he owned in Láchar. This made the bridge part of the second railway ever built in the province of Granada.
Why was the bridge needed?
The bridge was important because it helped move goods and people. It was part of a special narrow-gauge railway. This railway used small trains called Decauville locomotives. They helped transport things like sugar cane from the fields to the factories.
The Bridge's Later Life
After many years, the railway was no longer used. But the bridge found a new purpose! It became a road bridge for cars. It helped people travel between Láchar and other nearby towns like Daimuz Bajo, Valderrubio, Fuente Vaqueros, and Escóznar.
When the bridge closed
In 2006, the Eiffel Bridge could no longer be used. A vehicle had an accident on the bridge. This caused a small part of the bridge's support to break. Because of this, the whole structure collapsed. Since 2007, a new bridge has been built right next to the old one. This new bridge helps people cross the river safely today.
Who was Gustave Eiffel?
