Where the Eightmile River Flows

The Eightmile River starts in a quiet, undeveloped area. This spot is in the town of East Haddam, Connecticut. It begins in small swamps and wet areas. From there, the river flows south.

It ends its journey at Hamburg Cove. This cove is near Hamburg, Connecticut. Hamburg Cove connects to the larger Connecticut River.

The East Branch

The East Branch is another part of the Eightmile River system. It begins near Salem, Connecticut. This branch joins the main Eightmile River later on.

Fun for Paddlers

The Eightmile River is a popular spot for people who love to paddle. You can go kayaking or canoeing here. A well-known paddling route starts southwest of Salem. It's a great adventure for those who enjoy being on the water.

Whitewater Challenges

Parts of the river offer exciting challenges. These sections have what's called whitewater. Whitewater means the water is moving fast and is bubbly. It creates rapids that can be thrilling.

The rapids on the Eightmile River can be Class III-IV.

  • Class III rapids are exciting but manageable. They have moderate waves and require good paddling skills.
  • Class IV rapids are more difficult. They have powerful waves and require advanced skills.

Between the rapids, there are calmer sections. These are called flatwater or quickwater. They are perfect for a short break. You can finish your paddling trip at the Route 156 bridge. This bridge is just before the East Branch meets the main river.
