Eileen Dennes' Early Life and Start in Acting
Eileen Dennes was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1898. Her full birth name was Eileen Amhurst Cowen. She started her acting journey on stage in the early 1910s. This was before she ever appeared in movies!
In 1917, Eileen traveled to America. She quickly found work with a film company called Empire All-Star Film Co. Her very first movie role was playing Ethel Fielding in a film called The Unforeseen. She made a few more movies in Hollywood that year, even working with another actress named Olive Tell.
Soon after, Eileen decided to move to England to find more acting opportunities. There, a director named Cecil Hepworth offered her a contract. This led to her first English movie, Sheba, in 1919, where she played Rhoda Meredith. She starred alongside Alma Taylor in this film.
Becoming a Movie Star
After Sheba, Eileen Dennes started getting lead roles in many films. She appeared in movies like Once Aboard the Lugger in 1920, Mr. Justice Raffles in 1921, and The Pipes of Pan in 1923. She often worked with Alma Taylor again in these films.
Eileen's last movie role was in 1925. She played a character named Lucy in a film called The Squire of Long Hadley. She worked with actor Brian Aherne for the Stoll Film Co. on this movie.
Eileen Dennes' Film Career
Even though many Irish male actors became very famous in Hollywood's silent film industry, a few Irish women also made their mark. Eileen Dennes was one of them. Her movie career was quite short, lasting only about eight years.
Between 1919 and 1925, Eileen Dennes acted in about twelve silent films. She worked with important directors like Cecil Hepworth. Her final film with Hepworth was Comin' Thro the Rye in 1923. After that, she worked with other directors, like Fred LeRoy Granville, on films such as The Sins Ye Do in 1924.
Eileen's acting career ended in 1925. It's amazing to think how many talented Irish actors contributed to the silent movie era, which only lasted for about 15 years in Hollywood!
