Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl was a German football club. It was located in the city of Eisenhüttenstadt in Brandenburg. The club stopped existing in 2016. It then joined with another club called FC Eisenhüttenstadt. Today, FC Eisenhüttenstadt plays in the Brandenburg-Liga. This league is the sixth level of football in Germany.
History of the Club
The club started a long time ago. It was first known as BSG Stahl Fürstenberg Ost. This was in 1950. It was an "enterprise sports community." This means it was a sports club for workers. In 1952, their football team joined a new league. It was called the Bezirksliga Frankfurt an der Oder. This was the third-highest league.
A new city was built nearby. It was for workers of a big ironworks. This city was first called Stalinstadt. So, the team's name changed in 1953. It became BSG Stahl Stalinstadt. Later, in 1961, Fürstenberg, Stalinstadt, and Schönfließ joined together. They formed the city of Eisenhüttenstadt. Because of this, the sports club was renamed BSG Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt.
The team, Stahl, played in East Germany's second division. This league was called the DDR-Liga. They even played in the top league, the DDR-Oberliga, two times. In the 1970–71 season, the team was moved down a league. This happened because they were not following the rules. They were paying their players, which was not allowed.
After German reunification in 1990, the club got its current name. It was called Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl. In 1991, they played in the last ever FDGB-Pokal final. This was a big cup competition. They lost 1–0 to Hansa Rostock, who were the league champions.
Even though they lost, playing in the final was important. It meant they qualified for a European competition. This was the Cup Winner's Cup in the next year. They played against Galatasaray from Turkey. They were knocked out in the first round.
This was a high point for the club. After that, they moved down to the third-tier league. This league was called the NOFV-Oberliga Nord. In 1994, the club became part of the new Regionalliga Nordost. They played at this level until the league ended in 2000.
Stahl then returned to the Oberliga for five more seasons. In late 2004, the club faced financial problems. They had to stop playing in the league. Their results were cancelled. But they managed to recover. They were able to put a team together again. They played in the Verbandsliga Brandenburg.
For the 2013–14 season, they dropped down to the Landesliga. However, they won their division. This meant they immediately returned to the Brandenburg-Liga. In June 2015, Stahl was part of a merger. They joined to create FC Eisenhüttenstadt. One year later, in June 2016, Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl officially stopped existing. It fully became part of FC Eisenhüttenstadt. FC Eisenhüttenstadt continues to play in the Brandenburg-Liga.
