Who is Eithne FitzGerald?
Eithne FitzGerald was born in Dublin, Ireland. Her maiden name was Ingoldsby. An economist is someone who studies how money, industries, and jobs work in a country. Eithne FitzGerald used her knowledge of economics in her political career.
Starting in Politics
Before becoming a TD, Eithne FitzGerald tried to get elected to Dáil Éireann (the Irish parliament) four times. She ran in general elections in the Dublin South area. She was finally elected as a TD in the 1992 general election. In that election, she received the most first-choice votes of any candidate in the whole country.
Working in Government
After the 1992 election, the Labour Party joined with another party, Fianna Fáil, to form a new government. This is called a "coalition government."
First Government Role (1993-1994)
In January 1993, Eithne FitzGerald was given an important job. She became a Minister of State at the Department of Finance. Her special tasks included working with the Tánaiste (who is like the deputy leader of the country) and helping with the National Development Plan. This plan was about improving Ireland's economy and infrastructure. The Labour Party left this government in November 1994.
Second Government Role (1994-1997)
In December 1994, a new coalition government was formed. It was called the "Rainbow Coalition" because it included three different parties: Fine Gael, the Labour Party, and Democratic Left. Eithne FitzGerald was again appointed as a Minister of State. This time, she worked at the Department of Enterprise and Employment. She was also a Minister of State at the Office of the Tánaiste.
One of her key achievements was introducing the Freedom of Information legislation in Ireland. This law gives people the right to access information held by public bodies.
After Her Time as a TD
Eithne FitzGerald served as a Minister of State until the Rainbow Coalition government lost the 1997 general election. She lost her seat as a TD in that election. Another politician, Olivia Mitchell, took her place. Eithne FitzGerald tried to get elected again in Dublin South in the 2002 general election, but she was not successful.
Family Life
Eithne FitzGerald is married to John D. FitzGerald. John D. FitzGerald is the son of a former Taoiseach, Garret FitzGerald. The Taoiseach is the head of the government in Ireland.
