Eksjö is a special town in Jönköping County, Sweden. It is the main town of Eksjö Municipality. In 2010, about 9,700 people lived there. Eksjö is famous for its well-preserved old wooden buildings.

History of Eksjö
Eksjö likely started in the Middle Ages. It was a meeting place for a regional council called a "thing." The town was first mentioned in a document on April 22, 1345. It was called "Ekesiö" back then.
Becoming a City
In 1403, King Eric of Pomerania gave Eksjö its official city rights. This was a big deal for the town. In the 1500s, Eksjö was one of six important Swedish cities in the Småland province.
The Dacke Rebellion
After King Gustav Vasa became king in 1524, a leader named Nils Dacke started a rebellion. Dacke took control of the area, and people in Eksjö supported him. After the king's army defeated Dacke, his rebellion was put down. His actions were publicly condemned to prevent new uprisings.
This rebellion might have led King Gustav Vasa to take away Eksjö's city rights in 1544. Today, you can find many monuments and museums in Småland that remember these times.
Eksjö Rebuilt
During the Northern Seven Years' War, in 1568, an army led by Daniel Rantzau burned Eksjö to the ground. But the town was soon rebuilt in a slightly different spot. A Dutch builder named Arendt de Roy helped with the new construction.
In August 2015, a fire happened in the old part of Eksjö.
How Eksjö Grew
Eksjö first became important as a center for trading oxen. But it stayed a small town for a long time. Then, a military training ground was set up nearby for the Småland Regiment.
Eksjö continued to be a center for military groups. This included an engineering battalion and the Husars of Småland. Because of its military focus, Eksjö did not develop many large factories or industries.

What to See in Eksjö
Like many other Swedish cities, Eksjö had a big fire in the 1800s. In 1856, half of the city burned down. But the northern part of the original wooden city remained safe. Some of these buildings date back to when the city was rebuilt in 1568.
