History of El Provencio
Why El Provencio Was Founded
El Provencio was likely founded because of the Zancara River. This river provided a good source of water, which was very important for new settlements. The town might have been started as early as 1318. This is the oldest date we have that mentions the town's beginning.
Who Founded the Town
The town was founded by Infante Don Juan Manuel. He was a very important person at that time. He was the Lord of Alarcón and also ruled the region of Murcia. Don Juan Manuel was connected to many kings across the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal).
He was known as a warrior during the Reconquista. This was a long period when Christian kingdoms took back land from Muslim rulers in Spain. Don Juan Manuel also started many new towns in the area. El Provencio was one of these towns. It was located between Murcia and lands owned by Spanish religious groups.
Royal Connections
Don Juan Manuel married the daughter of King James II of Aragon. This marriage created a link between the kingdom of Aragon and El Provencio. Later, Don Alfonso of Aragon became the first count of this area in Castile.
