El Rosario is a city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa. It is also the name of the area around the city, called a municipality. In 2010, about 16,001 people lived in the city. El Rosario is located about 31 miles (50 kilometers) south of Mazatlán.

El Rosario is a small town known for its beautiful church altar. Many people visit just to see this amazing altar. Long ago, El Rosario was the richest town in Northwest Mexico. This was because of the many silver mines nearby.
Famous People and Local Crafts
El Rosario was the hometown of Lola Beltrán, a very famous Mexican singer. There is a small museum built to honor her, but it is not always open. Today, the people of El Rosario make pottery, furniture, and leather goods. These crafts are an important part of the local economy.
How El Rosario Was Founded
The city of El Rosario was founded on August 3, 1655. The story goes that a soldier named Bonifacio was looking for lost cattle. He found them by a river in an area now called Loma de Santiago.
It got dark, so he made a fire to stay warm. The next morning, he woke up to a big surprise. Under the ashes of his fire, he saw large pieces of melted silver stuck to a rock! He quickly told his boss the exciting news. Before he left, he placed rosary beads to mark the special spot. His boss came to see for himself and soon, people began to dig for silver there.
