María Lucila "Lola" Beltrán Ruiz (born March 7, 1932 – died March 24, 1996) was a famous Mexican singer and actress. She is known as one of Mexico's most celebrated voices in Ranchera and Huapango music. People often called her Lola la Grande, which means "Lola the Great."
Lola Beltrán sang many popular songs. These include "Cucurrucucú paloma" and "Paloma Negra". She also worked with other famous Mexican singers like Amalia Mendoza and Juan Gabriel. Her song Soy infeliz was even used in a movie by director Pedro Almodóvar.
She started her acting career in 1940 in an Argentine film. Later, she appeared in many Mexican movies. She worked with well-known stars like María Félix. Lola Beltrán also hosted TV shows, such as Noches tapatias and El estudio de Lola Beltrán. On these shows, she welcomed other music stars, including Luis Miguel.
Her Life Story
Lola Beltrán grew up in El Rosario, Sinaloa, Mexico. She studied to become a secretary and also joined singing contests. Later, she moved to Mexico City. She worked as a secretary at a big radio station called XEW-AM. There, a radio announcer named Raul Mendivil discovered her amazing singing talent.
Lola Beltrán married Alfredo Leal, who was a bullfighter and actor. They had a daughter named María Elena Leal, who also became a singer. Lola Beltrán started acting in films in 1954. She starred in many musical movies. She also hosted musical TV shows from 1976 to 1985.
Lola Beltrán is still seen as one of the most successful ranchera singers ever. She performed for many important world leaders. These included presidents of France and the United States, and kings and queens from Spain and the United Kingdom.
She was the first ranchera singer to perform at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. This is a very important concert hall. She also sang in famous places around the world, like the Olympia Music Hall in Paris and the Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow.
In 1995, Mexico honored Lola Beltrán. They put her on a series of postage stamps. This was to celebrate her amazing career in music. It also recognized how she helped share Mexican culture worldwide.
Her Last Days
Lola Beltrán recorded a special album called Disco del Siglo (Album of the Century). She made this album with Lucha Villa and Amalia Mendoza. Soon after, she passed away in Mexico City in 1996.
Her body was placed in the rotunda of the Palacio de Bellas Artes. This is a very special honor given only to Mexico's most celebrated artists. It allowed her fans to say goodbye.
