Amalia Mendoza García (born July 10, 1923 – died June 11, 2001) was a famous Mexican singer and actress. People often called her La Tariácuri. She was known for her amazing voice. Some of her biggest hit songs were "Échame a mi la culpa" and "Amarga navidad." Amalia had a lifelong best friend, Martha de Miranda Jiménez, who she called "Martuquia." Martha often traveled with Amalia when she was on tour.

Amalia Mendoza's Music Journey

Amalia Mendoza got her nickname, La Tariácuri, from an important Indigenous leader. This leader belonged to the Purépecha people from Michoacán, Mexico. Amalia's brothers used this nickname first for their music group, Trío Tariácuri. Later, Amalia and her sister, Perla, used it for their duo, Las Tariacuritas.

Amalia became famous as a solo singer in 1954. This happened when she started singing for the XEW radio station. She recorded an amazing 36 music albums during her career. In 1962, she won a special award called the Macuilxóchitl Award. This award was for being the best female bolero singer of ranchera music.

For most of her career, Amalia sang with the famous Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán band. She recorded many ranchera and bolero songs. These songs were written by well-known composers like José Alfredo Jiménez, Cuco Sánchez, José Ángel Espinoza, Gabriel Ruiz, and Tomás Méndez.
