The name "El Trébol" means "The Clover" in Spanish. This name came from the British companies that helped build the railroad system in Argentina. The Ferrocarril Central Argentino company named three train stations in a row after important plants from Great Britain:

- Los Cardos ("The Thistles") referred to the Thistle, which is a symbol of Scotland.
