The group is the most important breeding site for southern giant petrels

The Elephant Cays are a group of small islands found near the southern end of Falkland Sound. They are located just north-west of Speedwell Island in the Falkland Islands, which are in the South Atlantic Ocean. These islands cover a total area of about 248 hectares (that's like 613 football fields!). The group includes islands such as Golden Knob, Sandy Cay, West Island, Southwest Island, and Stinker Island. A global bird conservation group called BirdLife International has recognized this area as an Important Bird Area (IBA). This means it's a very special place for many kinds of birds.

About the Elephant Cays

The islands are covered with a type of tall, grassy plant called tussac grass. This grass provides great shelter and food for many animals. Not much is known about the history of these islands. However, some of them might have had cattle (like cows) grazing on them in the 1930s and 1940s. Stinker Island, one of the Elephant Cays, was used for grazing cattle until 1985.

Amazing Wildlife and Birds

The Elephant Cays are incredibly important for wildlife, especially birds. Many different bird species live and breed here. For example, you can find Magellanic penguins waddling around. There are also striated caracaras, which are smart birds of prey.

The islands are most famous for being the world's most important breeding spot for southern giant petrels. Imagine this: about 11,000 pairs of these large seabirds come here to nest and raise their chicks! That's a huge number. You can also find two smaller groups of imperial shags, which are diving birds that catch fish.
