Elias Menachem Stein (born January 13, 1931 – died December 23, 2018) was a very important American mathematician. He was a top expert in a math area called harmonic analysis. This field studies waves and patterns. He taught at Princeton University from 1963 until he passed away.

Early Life and Education

Elias Stein was born in Antwerp, Belgium. His parents were Elkan Stein and Chana Goldman. They were Ashkenazi Jews from Belgium. When Germany invaded Belgium in 1940, his family had to leave. They moved to the United States and first arrived in New York City.

Elias went to Stuyvesant High School and finished in 1949. A famous mathematician named Paul Cohen was his classmate there. After high school, Elias went to the University of Chicago. He earned his Ph.D. in 1955. His teacher was Antoni Zygmund, who was also a very famous mathematician.

Teaching and Research

After getting his Ph.D., Stein started teaching. He taught at MIT in 1955. Then, in 1958, he moved back to the University of Chicago. In 1963, he became a full professor at Princeton University. He stayed at Princeton for the rest of his career.

Stein's main work was in harmonic analysis. He helped make this field clearer and stronger. He developed many new ideas and theories. Some of these include "Stein interpolation" and the "Stein maximal principle." These ideas helped mathematicians understand how functions behave.

He also wrote many important books on harmonic analysis. These books are often used as standard guides for students and researchers. His "Princeton Lectures in Analysis" books were written for his college classes at Princeton.

Mentoring Future Mathematicians

Elias Stein was also known for teaching many students. He guided at least 52 graduate students. He helped shape how modern Fourier analysis is understood. Two of his students, Charles Fefferman and Terence Tao, even won the Fields Medal. This is one of the highest awards in mathematics.

Awards and Honors

Stein received many awards for his work. These include the Steele Prize in 1984 and 2002. He also won the Schock Prize in Mathematics in 1993. In 1999, he received the Wolf Prize in Mathematics. In 2001, he was given the National Medal of Science. This is a very high honor from the U.S. government.

He was also a member of important groups. These included the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2012, he became a fellow of the American Mathematical Society.

Family Life

In 1959, Elias Stein married Elly Intrator. She was also a Jewish refugee from World War II. They had two children, Karen Stein and Jeremy C. Stein. They also had three grandchildren: Alison, Jason, and Carolyn.

His son, Jeremy, is a professor of financial economics at Harvard University. Jeremy also worked as an adviser for important government officials. He was on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors from 2012 to 2014.

Elias Stein passed away in 2018 at the age of 87. He died from problems related to lymphoma, a type of cancer.
