Eliezer Halfin (born June 18, 1948 – died September 6, 1972) was a talented wrestler. He was born in Latvia and became part of the Israeli Olympic team. He competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany.
Sadly, Eliezer was one of 11 athletes and coaches who were taken hostage. This happened on September 5, 1972, by a group called Black September. During a rescue attempt by the German police, all nine remaining hostages, including Eliezer, lost their lives on September 6. Five of the attackers and one German police officer also died during the event.
About Eliezer Halfin
Eliezer was born in Riga, Latvia. He worked as a mechanic. In 1969, he moved to Israel. He officially became an Israeli citizen just seven months before his death. Eliezer was a lightweight wrestler. He had been active in the sport for 11 years. His parents and a sister survived him.
His Wrestling Journey
In Israel, Eliezer was a member of the Hapoel Tel Aviv sports club. He was a very dedicated athlete. He achieved 12th place in the world championships. In 1971, he earned second place in an international competition in Bucharest, Romania. The next year, in 1972, he placed third in a competition in Greece.
Olympic Dream
Participating in the 20th Olympic Games was a huge moment for Eliezer. It was the highlight of his career. Going to the Olympics was a dream come true for him.
Legacy
Eliezer Halfin is buried in Kiryat Shaul Cemetery in Tel Aviv, Israel. He is remembered as a dedicated athlete who pursued his dreams.
