Eliphalet Remington (born October 28, 1793 – died August 12, 1861) was an American inventor and engineer. He is famous for starting a company that became Remington Arms. This company is well-known for making firearms.
Early Life and Skills
Eliphalet Remington was born in 1793 in Suffield, Connecticut. He was the only son in his family. His family later moved to New York.
Eliphalet learned the skill of a blacksmith from his father. A blacksmith works with metal, shaping it using heat and tools. He worked at his family's metal shop, called a forge.
Starting a Business
When Eliphalet was 23 years old, he made his first rifle. He bought the firing part of the gun from a gunsmith. But he made the long metal barrel himself.
People were very impressed with his handmade rifle. They liked it so much that Eliphalet decided to make more of them. This was the start of his gun-making business.
By 1840, his three sons joined him in the family business. They formed a company called E. Remington and Sons. Eliphalet led this company until he passed away in 1861.
The company grew bigger over time. It started making other products, like bicycles, in addition to firearms. The company was known as Remington Arms for many years.
Family Life
Eliphalet Remington married Abigail Paddock. They had five children together. One of his sons, Philo Remington, also became involved in the family business. Eliphalet also gave a lot of money to help start Syracuse University.
