Elisaveta Lyubomirova Belcheva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria, on April 16, 1893. Her father worked as a clerk. She went to school in Sofia, the capital city.

Early Years and First Poems

When she was about 14 years old, she lived for a year in Veliko Tarnovo with her family. This is where she wrote her very first poems. From 1910 to 1911, she worked as a teacher in a village called Aftani. This experience helped her understand life in the countryside.

After teaching, she went to Sofia University to study Slavic languages and literature. Her first poems, Why and Night Song, were published in a magazine in 1915.

Becoming a Famous Writer

Elisaveta Bagryana truly became part of the writing world after World War I ended. This was a time when poetry was changing a lot. By 1921, she was very active in literature. She wrote for many different newspapers and magazines.

Her first book, The Eternal and the Holy, came out in 1927. This book made her very well-known and respected by other writers. She also started writing stories for children.

Her poems are often clear, heartfelt, and serious. For example, in The Well, she compares a well she dug as a child to the source of her poetry. Many of her poems show a strong feminine spirit, like The Eternal. Others, like The Elements, show a youthful and rebellious energy.
