Her Early Life and Family
Eliza H. Trotter was the younger daughter of two artists, Marianne Hunter and John Trotter. Her mother passed away in 1777. Eliza grew up in Dublin, Ireland, and followed in her parents' footsteps to become an artist.
Showing Her Art to the Public
Eliza first showed her artwork in 1800. At that time, she was living at 16 Strafford Street in Dublin. By 1802, she was exhibiting her art from Parliament House. In 1804, she lived at 30 Cuffe Street.
In 1804, Eliza was chosen for a special project. She decorated a house in Glasnevin. This house was a gift from the Harp Society of Dublin to Charles Lindsay, who was the Bishop of Kildare.
Famous Portraits and Engravings
Eliza's talent for portraits was recognized. Her painting of Patrick Quin, a harpist, was turned into an engraving. An engraving is a print made from a picture, often used in books or magazines. This engraving was used in a publication called the Monthly Pantheon.
Another one of her portraits was also engraved by the same artist, Henry Brocas. This was a portrait of John Bernard Trotter, who was the secretary of the Harp Society.
Studying and Exhibiting in London
In 1809, Eliza showed six portraits at an exhibition with the Dublin Society in Hawkins House. A few years later, in 1811, she moved to London. There, she continued her art studies at the famous Royal Academy Schools.
While in London, she exhibited a painting called Portrait of a Young Lady with the Royal Society. From 1811 to 1814, she also showed historical paintings and other subject paintings. She exhibited these works with the British Institution from different addresses in Westminster and Hammersmith.
Her Best-Known Work
One of Eliza H. Trotter's most famous paintings is a portrait of Lady Caroline Lamb. This important artwork is now kept in the National Portrait Gallery in London. After 1814, not much more is known about Eliza's life.
