Moving to Canada
Elizabeth moved to Canada in 1799. She came with her husband, John Hale. John was an officer in the British Army. He was sent to work in Quebec City.
Elizabeth became known for her beautiful drawings and paintings. She especially loved to paint landscapes. One of her famous works is a watercolour painting. It shows the city of York (now Toronto) in 1804.
Life During Wartime
During the War of 1812, Elizabeth took her children to England. This was to keep them safe from the fighting. They returned to Canada after the war ended.
Later, her husband bought a large piece of land. It was called the seigneurie of Sainte-Anne-de-la-Pérade. Elizabeth filled a sketchbook with drawings of this new property. She drew the buildings and the nature around them.
