Elizabeth Coppin (born Clyatt, 1768–1812) was a talented English painter. She lived during a time when art was becoming more popular. Elizabeth was known for her skills in painting different types of art.

Early Life and Family

Elizabeth Clyatt was born in Norfolk, England, in 1768. She later married Daniel Coppin, who was also an artist. Daniel was important in the art world. He was one of the people who helped start the Norwich School of Painters. This was a group of artists known for their landscape paintings.

Elizabeth and Daniel Coppin had a daughter named Emily Stannard. Emily also became a famous artist. She was especially known for her beautiful still life paintings.

Artistic Achievements

Elizabeth Coppin was a recognized artist in her own right. She received awards for her work. In 1802, she won the greater Silver Pallet. This award came from the Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. She earned it for a copy she made using pastels. It was a copy of a painting by the artist Salvator Rosa.

A few years later, in 1808, Elizabeth won another big award. She received a gold medal. This was for an oil painting she copied. It was a copy of a work by the artist Teniers. These awards show how skilled Elizabeth was as a painter.

Her Works and Legacy

Elizabeth Coppin created a large painting, called a mural, for a church. This mural is at the church of St Stephen the Protomartyr in Norfolk. Her husband had a special monument built for her in this church. This monument is very important. It is the main source of information we have about Elizabeth's life.

Elizabeth was also known for painting portraits. These are paintings of people. Sadly, many of her pastel paintings have not survived over time. However, one of her oil paintings is still around. It is a copy of The Cottage Door by the famous artist Thomas Gainsborough. This painting is now kept at the Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery.
