Elizabeth Sarah Mazuchelli (born 1832, died 1914) was an English explorer and writer. People also called her Nina. She wrote a book called The Indian Alps and How We Crossed Them in 1876. This book was about a two-month trip she took into the amazing Himalayas mountains.
About Nina Mazuchelli's Life
Nina Mazuchelli was born in 1832. She married Francis Mazuchelli in 1853 in Geneva. Francis was a clergyman, which is a religious leader.
In 1858, Nina and Francis traveled to India. Francis worked there as a chaplain for the army in a city called Calcutta.
In 1869, Francis was moved to Darjeeling. Nina was very happy about this move. She wrote that it was a relief to leave the hot weather. She loved the cool, fresh air near the snowy mountains.
It was from Darjeeling that Nina and Francis went on an exciting trip. They explored the Singalila Ridge. Nina wrote her famous book, The Indian Alps and How We Crossed Them, about this adventure.
Later Years and Other Travels
Nina and Francis returned to England in 1875. Francis became a curate in a town called Wrington.
They also traveled to the Tatra and Carpathian Mountains in Europe. Nina wrote another book about these travels called Magyarland.
Later, Francis became a vicar in Felmersham. When he retired in 1895, they moved to Nantgaredig in Wales. Nina Mazuchelli passed away in 1914. Francis had died earlier, in 1901. They are buried together in Church of Holy Trinity, Burrington churchyard.
Nina's Adventures in India
Nina Mazuchelli's two-month journey into the mountains of India was very detailed. A book from 1984, On Top of the World: Five Women Explorers in Tibet, tells more about her trip.
It is believed that Nina was the first Western woman to see Mount Everest. This happened in 1869. She described seeing the huge mountain as "the dream of my childhood." She felt it was the closest point between Heaven and Earth.
