Elizabeth Millicent Sutherland (born Sutherland-Leveson-Gower) was an important Scottish noblewoman. She was born on March 30, 1921, and passed away on December 9, 2019. As the 24th Countess of Sutherland, she held a special title in the Scottish nobility. She was also the leader, or "chief," of Clan Sutherland, a famous Scottish family.
Early Life and Family
Elizabeth was born in Chelsea, London, on March 30, 1921. She was the only child of Elizabeth Demarest and Lord Alastair Sutherland-Leveson-Gower. Her mother was from New York City, and her father was the son of the 4th Duke of Sutherland.
Sadly, Elizabeth's father died when she was just a baby. He passed away in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in April 1921 from malaria. He had been on a hunting trip. A few years later, in 1931, her mother also passed away.
After her parents died, Elizabeth was cared for by her uncle, George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland. When her uncle passed away without any children of his own, Elizabeth inherited his main title. She became the 24th Countess of Sutherland and Lady Strathnaver. She also inherited most of his large land, including the historic Dunrobin Castle. To show she was the chief of Clan Sutherland, she later changed her family name to simply Sutherland.
Marriage and Children
On January 5, 1946, Elizabeth married Charles Noel Janson, a journalist. They had four children together:
- Alistair Charles St. Clair Sutherland, who was born on January 7, 1947. He later became the 25th Earl of Sutherland.
- The Hon. Martin Dearman Sutherland Janson, also born on January 7, 1947.
- Lady Annabel Elizabeth Hélène Janson, born on May 16, 1952.
- The Hon. Matthew Peter Demarest Janson, born on April 8, 1955, who sadly passed away young in 1969.
Later Life
The Countess of Sutherland lived a long life, passing away on December 9, 2019, at the age of 98. She died at her home in London, where she lived with her daughter Annabel. Her funeral was held at Dornoch Cathedral in Scotland on December 21.
