Elizabeth V. Colbert (1865 – July 13, 1929) was an important American politician from New York. She worked hard to help women gain the right to vote and held several important government jobs.

Elizabeth Colbert's Public Service

Elizabeth Colbert was from Albany County, New York. She was one of the people who started the very first Equal Suffrage Club in Albany. This club worked to get women the right to vote. She also became a leader in the New York State Woman Suffrage Party.

First Woman to Run for Office

Elizabeth Colbert made history in Albany County. She was the first woman there to try and win an election for public office. She wanted to represent the county in the New York State Assembly, which is part of the state government. Even though she didn't win, her attempt was a big step for women in politics.

Government Roles

Later, Elizabeth Colbert worked for the Albany Health Department. She was in charge of "Vital Statistics," which means keeping records of important events like births and deaths.

In 1925, Governor Al Smith chose her to be part of the State Motion Picture Censorship Commission. This group decided what movies could be shown. In 1927, Robert Moses, who was the Secretary of State at the time, appointed her as a chief clerk and Second Deputy Secretary of State of New York. This was another important role in state government.

Political Influence

Elizabeth Colbert was a strong member of the Democratic Party. She was also a vice-chairman for the Democratic organization in Albany County. In 1920, she traveled to San Francisco, California, to attend the 1920 Democratic National Convention. This is where the Democratic Party chooses its candidate for president.

People admired her political skills. She knew a lot about the people she represented. She also understood what was important to families and communities, like good schools.

Elizabeth Colbert's Personal Life

Elizabeth Colbert was married to Dr. Edward V. Colbert. He was a doctor who worked as a coroner's physician. They had two sons. Every summer, Elizabeth enjoyed spending a month with her sons in the Adirondacks, where they would go hunting, fishing, and have fun.

She was also a member of several community groups. These included St. Peter's Episcopal Church, the Daughters of Rebecca, and the Order of the Eastern Star.

Elizabeth Colbert passed away in Albany, New York, on July 13, 1929. She had been sick with influenza for several months. Her husband, Edward, died a few years later in 1937.
