Elk Ridge is a city located in Utah County, Utah, in the United States. It was first known as a town called Salem Hills. In 1978, its name changed to Elk Ridge. This new name came from the many herds of elk that used to spend their winters in the area.
Elk Ridge is part of a larger urban area called the Provo–Orem Metropolitan Statistical Area. This means it's connected to the bigger cities of Provo and Orem. In 2020, the city had a population of 4,687 people. Elk Ridge officially became a city in November 2000.
History and Location
The land where Elk Ridge now stands was once part of a large farm called Goosenest Ranch. This ranch was at the base of Mount Loafer, in the southern part of Utah County. It was located southeast of the towns of Salem and Payson.
In 1970, the ranch was sold, and a dirt road was built. This led to the creation of a new settlement called Salem Hills. The very first house in this new area was finished in 1973. On December 22, 1976, Salem Hills officially became a town after more than 100 people moved there. Just two years later, in 1978, the town changed its name to Elk Ridge. The name was chosen because many elk herds lived in and around the area.
The first official count of the town's population was in 1980, showing 381 residents. By 2000, the population grew to over 1,000 people. This growth allowed Elk Ridge to become a city in Utah. The city covers about 7.3 square kilometers (2.82 square miles) of land.
