Elkton is a small, unincorporated community in Elkrun Township, Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
You can find Elkton along Ohio State Route 154. It's located where two streams, Elk Run and the Little Beaver Creek, meet. The community uses the ZIP code 44415 for its mail.
Elkton is home to the Federal Correctional Institution, Elkton. This is a large federal prison for men. It is managed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Elkton also has a very short covered bridge, called the Church Hill Road Covered Bridge.
History of Elkton
Elkton was officially planned and laid out in 1835. The community got its name from the nearby Elk Run creek.
A post office opened in Elkton in 1838. For a while, the community grew because of its location on the Sandy and Beaver Canal. Canals were like water highways for boats carrying goods.
However, by the late 1840s, the canal was not making enough money. It stopped operating, and the community of Elkton began to decline.
