Ella is a small, historic community in Morrow County, Oregon, United States. It is known as an "unincorporated community," which means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own city government like a big town or city.
Discovering Ella, Oregon
Ella is located along a historic road called Immigrant Lane. It is also very close to the famous Oregon Trail, which was a path pioneers used long ago to travel west. You can find Ella situated east of a place called Cecil and south of Boardman.
A Place on the Oregon Trail
The area around Ella is full of history, especially because of its connection to the Oregon Trail. Many pioneers who traveled west kept journals, and they often wrote about a special place called Well Spring. This important spring is about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Ella, right along the old trail.
About 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) south of Ella, there's a landform that pioneers called Well Spring Butte. A "butte" is a type of isolated hill with steep sides and a flat top. This butte was later renamed Ella Butte, taking its name from the community.
How Ella Got Its Name
Ella had its own post office for many years, from April 24, 1882, until September 30, 1910. The post office was first set up at the home of a man named Frank Oviatt.
The community was named after Frank Oviatt's daughter, Ella. The story goes that during a meeting to plan the new post office, little Ella was crying. Her father told her that if she stopped crying, the post office would be named after her. She must have stopped, because the name stuck! Frank Oviatt then became the very first postmaster for Ella.
