Ellen Carter (born Vavasour; 1762 – 22 September 1815) was a talented English artist. She was also known for illustrating books.

Early Life and Education

Ellen Vavasour was born in 1762. She was the daughter of Walter Vavasour from Weston in Yorkshire. She was baptised in York on May 16.

When she was young, Ellen went to a convent in Rouen, France. Even though her family had ties to the convent for many years, Ellen remained a Protestant. She was very devoted to her church throughout her life.

Marriage and Family

In November 1787, Ellen married the Reverend John Carter. He was a curate in Thornhill. Later, her husband became the headmaster of Lincoln Grammar School. He also served as a priest at St Swithin's Church, Lincoln.

Her Artistic Career

Ellen Carter loved art very much. She was especially good at drawing people. Her illustrations appeared in important publications like Archæologia and The Gentleman's Magazine.

One of her designs was even made into a print called ‘The Gardener's Girl.’ This print was meant to go with another famous artwork, ‘Woodboy,’ by Thomas Barker. Many of Ellen's drawings were owned by private art collectors.

Later Life and Legacy

Ellen's dedication to her art was very strong. Sadly, she faced a great sadness when her oldest son passed away. This event affected her deeply.

Ellen Carter died on September 22, 1815. She was buried in the churchyard of St. Peter in Eastgate, Lincoln.
