Ellen Johnston Maycock, born on September 15, 1950, in Maryland, is an American mathematician and a teacher of mathematics. She used to be a special professor at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. Her main work in math was about something called functional analysis.

Ellen Maycock's Journey in Math

Early Education and Degrees

Ellen Maycock started her college journey at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. In 1972, she earned a degree in both mathematics and economics.

Later, she went to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. There, she earned two more degrees in mathematics. She received her Master's degree in 1974 and her Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in 1986. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a field of study.

Teaching at DePauw University

After teaching for two years at Wellesley, Maycock joined the faculty at DePauw University in 1988. She became an associate professor in 1993 and a full professor in 2001.

She was known for her creative ways of teaching math. She created special workshops to help other teachers learn new and exciting ways to teach. She also used computer programs to help students understand difficult math ideas, like abstract algebra. She even brought technology into classes about geometry and analysis.

Working with Math Organizations

Ellen Maycock also played an important role in big math organizations. She worked on the boards for the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and the American Mathematical Society (AMS). These groups help mathematicians and promote math education.

From 2005 to 2015, she worked as an associate executive director for the American Mathematical Society. In this job, she helped organize meetings and programs for mathematicians. She also worked to make the public understand how important and cool mathematics is.

She was also part of a project called INGenIOuS. This project looked for new ways to encourage more math students to join the workforce.

Awards and Recognition

In 2003, DePauw University honored Ellen Maycock with a special award called the University Professor Award. This award recognized her excellent teaching, her service to the university, and her achievements in her field. She was named the Johnson Family University Professor for this period.
