Sir Elliott Fitzroy Belgrave is a respected retired judge from Barbados. He served as the seventh governor-general of Barbados from June 1, 2012, to June 30, 2017. Before that, he was the acting Governor-General for several months.
The Governor-General is a very important person in Barbados. They act as the representative of the Queen of England in the country. Sir Elliott Belgrave was chosen for this high role because of his long and distinguished career in law.
Education and Legal Career
Sir Elliott Belgrave studied law at University College London in England. He earned his law degree there in 1962. Later, he continued his studies at Darwin College, Cambridge, focusing on criminology.
He held many important positions in the legal system of Barbados. He was the Director of Public Prosecutions, which means he was the chief lawyer for the government in criminal cases. He also served as a judge in the highest courts of Barbados, including the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal.
Sir Elliott Belgrave was also given the special title of Queen's Counsel. This title is awarded to experienced lawyers who have shown great skill and knowledge in their field. He received the Companion of Honour of Barbados award for his significant contributions to the country's legal system.
Personal Life
Sir Elliott Belgrave is married to Loretta Belgrave. They have one daughter named Susan Matheson.
He is also a member of the Freemasons, which is a fraternal organization. He held a leadership position within the Freemasons in Barbados.
Honours and Awards
Sir Elliott Belgrave has received several high honours for his service to Barbados. On June 8, 2012, he was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George. This is a very prestigious award given for great service to the country.
He also holds the title of Companion of Honour of Barbados. These honours show how much his country appreciates his hard work and dedication.
