Political Journey
Freundel Stuart joined the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) in 1970. He served in the Senate of Barbados until 1994. The Senate is part of the country's parliament.
In 1994, he ran for election and became a Member of parliament for St. Philip South. However, he lost his seat in the 1999 election. In 2003, he ran in a different area, St. Michael South, but lost again. In 2008, he ran in St. Michael South once more and won, becoming its representative.
From 1995 to 2004, Mr. Stuart was the first vice-president of the DLP. He was also the Deputy Leader of the Opposition. This role means he was a main leader of the party not in power.
In 1995, he also became a "shadow" minister. This means he was ready to take on important roles like shadow deputy prime minister and shadow attorney general if his party won.
In 2004, Freundel Stuart was chosen as the leader of the DLP.
When the Democratic Labour Party won the 2008 election, Mr. Stuart became the deputy prime minister. He also served as the Attorney-General of Barbados (the chief legal advisor to the government) and minister of home affairs.
Becoming Prime Minister

On the same day, he was sworn in as the 7th Prime Minister of Barbados. He also took on roles as Minister for National Security, the Public Service, and Urban Development. The Governor-General Clifford Husbands officially appointed him.

During his time as Prime Minister, Stuart talked about making Barbados a republic. This would mean Barbados would have its own president as head of state instead of the Queen of Barbados. He also wanted to remove Barbados from the power of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ).
In the May 2018 election, the DLP lost all its seats to the Barbados Labour Party. This was a very big loss for a sitting government in Barbados's history. Freundel Stuart also lost his own seat.
On August 1, 2018, Freundel Stuart stepped down as the DLP leader. Verla De Peiza took over as the new leader.
