Elliston-Lafayette was a special kind of community in Montgomery County, Virginia, United States. It was called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it was an area identified by the government for counting people, but it wasn't an official town or city.

In the year 2000, about 1,241 people lived there. Later, in 2010, Elliston-Lafayette was divided. It became two separate CDPs: Elliston and Lafayette.

This area is part of a larger region called the Blacksburg–Christiansburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. This big area includes all of Montgomery County. It also has the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, and the city of Radford.

Many people living in the eastern part of Montgomery County often travel to Roanoke or Salem. These cities are usually closer for work, shopping, and other services. Traveling there avoids driving up Christiansburg Mountain on U.S. Route 460 or Interstate 81.

About Elliston and Lafayette

Most people who live in the area think of Elliston and Lafayette as two different communities. Lafayette is located near the Roanoke River. It is just across the line from Roanoke County. The north and south parts of the Roanoke River meet close to Interstate 81, north of Lafayette.

Lafayette was named after the Marquis de Lafayette. He was a French hero who helped America during the Revolutionary War. Even though it's spelled "Lafayette," people usually say it "Luh-fett" or "Luh-fay-ett."

Elliston is the larger community of the two. Its center is about three miles west of Lafayette. It is also located along US 460.

Nearby Communities

Shawsville is another community. It is about four miles west of Elliston. A large part of US 460 between Elliston and Shawsville is very straight. This is unusual for roads in this part of Virginia. People in the area call this section the Elliston Straightaway.

In the 1990s, there was a small disagreement between Elliston and Shawsville. They debated where the best place would be to put a "Welcome to Shawsville" sign along the Elliston Straightaway. Also, Shawsville Elementary School is located in the same ZIP Code as Elliston, which is 24087.
