History of Elmo

How Elmo Started

Elmo began its history in 1870. This was when the Texas and Pacific Railway built its train tracks through the area. A new community quickly grew around the railway line. The town was named Elmo to honor Elmo Scott, who was a surveyor for the T&P Railroad.

Early Growth and Changes

Elmo got its own post office in 1873. By the mid-1880s, the community was growing. It had several mills, five churches, and its own schools. About 900 people lived there at that time. However, as the years passed, the population started to decrease. By 1945, only 150 people called Elmo home. This number dropped even further to 90 people by 1990. The population stayed around 90 until the year 2000.

Past Rules in Elmo

In 1892, the people of Elmo made a rule that was unfair to some groups. This rule, known as a sundown town policy, meant that African Americans were not allowed to live in Elmo. Any Black residents who were already living there were forced to leave.
