Elna was once a small place in Inyo County, California. It is no longer there today. It was located along the Southern Pacific Railroad line. This spot was about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) southeast of a town called Big Pine. Elna was quite high up, at an elevation of 3878 feet (1182 meters) above sea level.

What Was Elna?

Elna was known as a "former settlement." This means it was once a place where people lived or worked, but it doesn't exist as a populated area anymore. Many small settlements like Elna grew up around important things like railroads.

Elna's Location

Elna was in Inyo County, which is in the eastern part of California. This area is famous for its beautiful mountains and valleys, including the Owens Valley. Being on the Southern Pacific Railroad was important for Elna. Railroads were like the highways of the past, connecting towns and helping people and goods travel.

Why Did Elna Disappear?

Elna was still shown on maps in 1913. After that, it likely faded away. Many small railroad stops or settlements disappeared over time. This could happen for many reasons. For example, new roads might have been built, or the railroad might have changed its routes. Sometimes, the resources that brought people there, like mining, ran out. Without a strong reason for people to stay, these small places often become "ghost towns" or simply vanish from maps.
