Eloísa Díaz Inzunza (born June 25, 1866 – died November 1, 1950) was a very important Chilean doctor. She made history by being the first woman to study medicine at the University of Chile. She was also the first woman to become a doctor in Chile and in all of South America.
Early Life and School
Eloísa Díaz Insunza was born in Santiago, Chile. Her parents were Eulogio Díaz Varas and Carmela Insunza. She went to school at Dolores Cabrera Martínez's school and Isabel Le Brun de Pinochet's school. She also studied at the Instituto Nacional.
In 1880, Eloísa joined the School of Medicine at the University of Chile. This happened shortly after a new law allowed women to study at the university. Eloísa Díaz became the first woman in South America to finish her studies and get her medical license. She graduated on December 27, 1886, and received her degree on January 3, 1887.
Her Work as a Doctor
Díaz started working at San Borja Hospital in January 1891. She also taught and worked as a doctor at Escuela Normal from 1889 to 1897. In 1898, she became the School Medic Supervisor for Santiago. Soon after, she was promoted to School Medic Supervisor for all of Chile.
She held this important job for over 30 years. Eloísa Díaz was also a kind person who helped others. She started several kindergartens and clinics for people who were poor. She also created school camps for children.
In 1910, Díaz went to a big meeting in Buenos Aires called the Hygiene and Medicine International Scientific Congress. There, she was called an "Illustrious Woman of America." This means she was seen as a very important woman in the Americas.
In 1911, Díaz became the Director of the School Medical Service of Chile. In this role, she started programs like providing school breakfasts for students. She also organized large vaccination campaigns for students. She worked to fight against alcoholism, rickets, and tuberculosis.
In 1919, Eloísa Díaz helped start the National Council of Women of Chile. She worked with other important women like Celinda Arregui and Isaura Dinator. This group worked hard to protect and improve women's rights.
Díaz stopped working in 1925. In 1950, she became sick and went to San Vicente de Paúl Hospital. She passed away there at the age of 84.
