Else Holmelund Minarik (born Else Holmelund) was an American writer who created more than 40 books for children. She was born on September 13, 1920, and passed away on July 12, 2012. Minarik is best known for her popular Little Bear book series, which was later made into a TV show. She also wrote another well-known book called No Fighting, No Biting!.

Else Minarik's Early Life and Career

Else Holmelund Minarik was born in Fredericia, Denmark. When she was four years old, her family moved to the United States. In 1940, Else married Walter Minarik, who sadly passed away in 1963.

Becoming a Journalist and Teacher

Else Minarik studied at Queens College, City University of New York, earning her degree in 1942. During World War II, she worked as a journalist for the Daily Sentinel newspaper in Rome, New York. Later, she lived on Long Island and became a first-grade teacher in the Commack School District. She then moved to Nottingham, New Hampshire.

Later Life and Writing Journey

In 1970, Minarik married her second husband, Homer Bigart, who was a famous journalist and won a Pulitzer Prize. After he passed away in 1991, she moved to Sunset Beach, North Carolina in Brunswick County, North Carolina. She continued to write her books by hand, just as she always had.

The Little Bear Series and Final Book

Else Holmelund Minarik's most famous works are the Little Bear books. These stories follow the adventures of a young bear and his friends, teaching valuable lessons in a gentle way. Her very last book, Little Bear and the Marco Polo, was published in 2010.

Passing Away

Else Holmelund Minarik passed away at her home on July 12, 2012. She was 91 years old and died from complications after having a heart attack. Her stories continue to be loved by children and families around the world.
