Her Early Life and Art Training

Elsie grew up in the northern part of England. She loved art and studied at the Sheffield School of Art from 1921 to 1924. After that, she spent four more years learning at the Royal Academy schools.

While at the Royal Academy between 1926 and 1930, Elsie won two important awards. These were the British Institute Scholarship and the Landseer Scholarship. These awards helped her continue her art studies.

Painting Life During World War II

During World War II, Elsie Dalton Hewland painted many pictures showing life on the British Home Front. The "Home Front" means what was happening in Britain itself, away from the battlefields.

Her paintings showed important scenes, like nurseries for children whose parents worked in factories. She also painted pictures of fighter planes being built and fixed. These artworks helped people understand the war's impact on daily life.

The War Artists' Advisory Committee bought several of her paintings. This committee collected art to record the war. Today, these paintings are kept at the Imperial War Museum in London. A famous art critic named Eric Newton even wrote about her work in his 1945 book, War Through Artists Eyes.

After the War: New Art and Exhibitions

After World War II ended, Elsie Hewland continued her artistic career. She worked as a medical illustrator, which means she drew pictures for medical books or studies.

She also showed her art regularly at the Royal Academy and with the Royal Watercolour Society. Elsie lived for many years in a place called Chalfont St. Giles. Later, she moved to Ventnor on the Isle of Wight.
