A Hospital's Story: Elsie Inglis
How the Hospital Started
This hospital was built using money left over from a group called the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service. A brave woman named Elsie Inglis started this group. During the First World War, her group sent hospital teams to help people in countries like France, Serbia, Russia, Corsica, and Greece.
Opening Its Doors
The Elsie Inglis Memorial Maternity Hospital first opened in July 1925. It started with 20 beds, ready to welcome new mothers and their babies.
Joining the NHS
In 1948, the hospital became part of the National Health Service (NHS). The NHS is a system that provides healthcare for everyone in the UK. The hospital was then managed by the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
The Hospital Closes
After many years of helping families, the hospital closed in 1988. The services it offered were moved to another hospital, the Eastern General Hospital. Many people in Edinburgh were sad about the closure and protested to try and keep it open. There was even an idea to name another maternity unit in the city after Elsie Inglis to remember her important work.
What Happened Next
After it closed as a maternity hospital, the building was used for a short time as a private nursing home and a nursery for children. However, it closed again in 2011 due to some issues. Today, the building has been changed into homes, and people now live where babies were once born.
