Eluned Morgan's Life Story
Eluned was born on a ship called Myfanwy while her family was traveling from Britain to Patagonia. Her father was Lewis Jones, who later gave his name to the city of Trelew in Chubut, Argentina.
Early Education and Protest
Eluned spent some time studying in Wales. Her father sent her from Patagonia to attend Dr Williams School in Dolgellau. In the Welsh colony in Patagonia, children learned in Welsh. However, in Wales, the Welsh language was often not allowed in schools because of rules known as the Welsh Not.
When Eluned arrived in Wales, she spoke Welsh and Spanish, but very little English. Winnie Ellis, whose brother was a Member of Parliament, remembered Eluned walking "like a prince." She stood out with her dark skin and eyes. When she started school, she led a protest out of the classroom against the school's rules about the Welsh language. The problem was finally solved when Michael D. Jones, who helped start the Welsh colony in Patagonia, came to help.
Working and Writing
After her studies, Eluned worked for a while at Cardiff Central Library. She eventually returned to Patagonia in 1918.
Eluned wrote many articles about Y Wladfa (the Welsh Settlement in Patagonia) for Welsh magazines like Cymru. This magazine was edited by Owen Morgan Edwards.
She is best known for her two travel books:
- Dringo'r Andes (1904): This book is about a trip she took across the country from the Welsh Settlement to the Andes mountains.
- Gwymon y Môr (1909): This book describes a sea journey from Britain to Patagonia.
Eluned also wrote a book about the history of the Incas, called Plant yr Haul (1915). Her book Dringo'r Andes shared stories about early Welsh life in Patagonia. It also talked about how the Welsh people got along with the Native Americans (which was generally good), the ruling Spanish people, and the Italian immigrants.
