Elwood Haynes "Bud" Hillis (born March 6, 1926 – died January 4, 2023) was an American politician and lawyer from Indiana. He was a member of the Republican Party. He served in the United States House of Representatives for Indiana's 5th district. He was a representative for 8 terms, from 1971 to 1987.

About Elwood "Bud" Hillis
Elwood Hillis was born in Kokomo, Indiana. He went to public schools there. He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1944. Later, he earned two degrees from Indiana University. He received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in 1949. Then, he got his law degree (J.D.) in 1952.
Bud Hillis had a famous older sister, Margaret Hillis. She was a well-known director of choirs. His father, Glen R. Hillis, also ran for Governor of Indiana in 1940. His grandfather, Elwood Haynes, was an inventor. He was one of the first people to build cars.
Hillis lived in Windsor, Colorado, later in his life. He passed away on January 4, 2023, at 96 years old.
Military Service
Hillis served in the United States Army during World War II. He was in Europe from 1944 to 1946. He held the rank of first lieutenant. He later retired from the Army Reserves in 1954. At that time, he was a captain in the infantry.
Political Career
After law school, Hillis became a lawyer in Kokomo in 1952.
Serving Indiana
He was a member of the Indiana House of Representatives. He served in the state legislature for two terms. Hillis also attended the Indiana State Republican conventions. He was a delegate from 1962 to 1970.
In Congress
In 1970, Hillis was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was a Republican member. He served for eight terms, from January 3, 1971, to January 3, 1987. He decided not to run for reelection in 1986.
After Congress
After leaving Congress, Hillis went back to being a lawyer. On March 17, 2010, he was honored for his many years of public service. This event took place in Kokomo, Indiana.
