Ely do Amparo, known simply as Ely, was a famous Brazilian football player. He was born on May 14, 1921, and passed away on March 9, 1991. Ely played as a central defender, which means he was a key player in the defense of his team. He was so good that he even played in two World Cups for Brazil!

Ely's Football Journey
Ely started playing football professionally in 1939 with a club called América. After a year, in 1940, he moved to Canto do Rio Football Club. He played there for five years.
Playing for Vasco da Gama
In 1945, Ely joined Vasco. This was a very successful time for him! He was part of a famous team known as the Expresso da Vitória, which means "Victory Express". This team was incredibly strong and won many titles.
With Vasco, Ely won the Campeonato Carioca, a state championship, five times: in 1945, 1947, 1949, 1950, and 1952. He also helped his team win the South American Club Championship in 1948. This was a big achievement for the club!
Moving to Sport Club do Recife
In 1953, Ely moved to Sport. He continued his winning streak there! He helped Sport win the Campeonato Pernambucano, another state championship, in 1953 and again in 1955. After this second win, Ely decided to retire from playing professional football.
Ely and the Brazil National Team
Ely was also a very important player for the Brazil national team. He played 19 games for his country.
World Cup Appearances
He was chosen to be part of Brazil's team for the World Cup twice. He played in the 1950 World Cup and again in the 1954 World Cup. Playing in a World Cup is a huge honor for any football player!
Panamerican Championship Win
Ely was also part of the Brazilian team that won the Panamerican Championship in 1952. This was another important international trophy for him and his country.
