Lieutenant-General Emanuel Scrope Howe (born around 1663 – died September 26, 1709) was an important English diplomat, army officer, and a Member of Parliament. He lived at The Great Lodge in Alice Holt Forest, Hampshire.

Life and Career

Emanuel Scrope Howe was the fourth son of John Grubham Howe. His older brother, Scrope Howe, 1st Viscount Howe, became a well-known politician.

Serving the King

In 1689, Emanuel Howe became a Groom of the Bedchamber. This was a special role where he was a trusted helper to King William III. He kept this job for the King's entire rule.

He also joined the army, serving in the 1st Foot Guards. He fought in Flanders and was hurt during the 1695 Siege of Namur in 1695. He bought a higher rank, becoming a colonel in 1695. He led the 15th Regiment of Foot until he passed away.

He was promoted several times:

  • Brigadier-General in 1704
  • Major-General in 1707
  • Lieutenant-General in 1709

From 1703 to 1705, he was the First Commissioner of Prizes. This meant he was in charge of goods captured during wartime.

Diplomat and Politician

Between 1705 and 1709, Emanuel Howe worked as a special ambassador. He was sent to the Elector of Hanover. His job was to keep good relations between England and Hanover. He successfully kept Hanover as part of the Grand Alliance. This was a group of countries working together.

He also became a Member of Parliament (MP). In 1701, he was elected to represent Morpeth. He was chosen to support the King's political party, the Whigs. In 1705, he also represented Wigan. Records show he only spoke in one debate during his time in Parliament.

In 1695, Emanuel Howe married Ruperta Howe. She was the daughter of Prince Rupert of the Rhine.

Rangers of Alice Holt Forest

From 1699, Emanuel and Ruperta were both appointed "Rangers of Alice Holt Forest". This was a special job given by the King. It meant they were in charge of looking after the forest. It was also a "sinecure," which means it was a job that paid money but didn't require much work.

They had three sons and two daughters. After Emanuel Howe died, Ruperta continued as "Ranger of the Holt" until 1740.

Emanuel Howe spent a lot of money, about £1,200, repairing the Great Lodge in the forest. King William had asked him to do this. However, the King never paid him back, which made Howe unhappy.

Forest Life and Changes

Howe tried to bring back some animals to the forest. He tried to reintroduce wild boar and even buffalo. However, these animals did not survive. This was because of poaching, which is illegal hunting. Poaching was a big problem in Alice Holt and nearby Woolmer Forest at that time.

Ruperta planted an oak tree near the Lodge to remember her father, Prince Rupert. In the 1960s, a memorial stone replaced the tree. The current Lodge building was built in the 1810s. It stands on the same spot where Emanuel and Ruperta lived.
