Early Life and Beginnings
Emanuel Ungaro's father was from Italy. He moved to France to escape a difficult political situation. His father was a tailor, someone who makes and mends clothes. He gave Emanuel a sewing machine when he was young, which sparked his interest in fashion.
When Ungaro was 22, he moved to Paris, France. He started working for the famous fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga. After three years, he left to work for another designer, André Courrèges.
The House of Emanuel Ungaro
In 1965, Emanuel Ungaro decided to open his own fashion house in Paris. He had help from a Swiss artist named Sonja Knapp and Elena Bruna Fassio.
Fashion Styles and Trends
In the mid-1960s, Ungaro became known as a "Space Age" designer. He created very modern and futuristic clothes. These designs often had simple, geometric shapes. They were made from new materials like wool, synthetics, plastics, and even metals. People wore these clothes with high boots, helmets, and cool jewelry.
In the 1970s, Ungaro's women's clothing became famous for its bright and colorful patterns. He loved mixing different prints together. His designs fit well with the "Big Look" or "Soft Look" of the time. This style featured layered and flowing clothes.
The 1980s were a very important time for Ungaro. He created designs that were strong and feminine at the same time. His clothes often had wide shoulders, ruffles, and drapes. He continued to use his signature eye-catching prints. This style was very popular and made women feel confident and beautiful.
Expanding the Brand
Ungaro launched his first collection for men, called Ungaro Uomo, in 1973. Ten years later, in 1983, he released his first perfume, named Diva. He later created other perfumes like Senso and Ungaro.
In 1996, Ungaro partnered with the company Salvatore Ferragamo. The next year, they joined with Bulgari to create a new perfume company called Emanuel Ungaro Parfums. More perfumes like Fleur de Diva and Apparition followed.
Changes and New Directions
In 2005, Emanuel Ungaro decided to retire. He sold his fashion label to a businessman named Asim Abdullah. After Ungaro left, the company had many different designers.
One famous moment happened in 2009 when actress Lindsay Lohan was named an artistic advisor. This caused a lot of talk in the fashion world. However, her work was not well-received, and she soon left the company.
In 2012, an Italian company called Aeffe took over making and selling Ungaro products. The brand returned to Paris Fashion Week with new creative directors. In 2015, Ungaro even launched a smart ring that would light up when certain contacts called your phone!
