Thames Embankment facts for kids
The Thames Embankment is a huge construction project from the 1800s. It helped create new land next to the River Thames in central London. Before this, the area was often wet and marshy.
What is the Thames Embankment?
The Embankment is a long road that runs along the northern side of the River Thames. It stretches from the Houses of Parliament in Westminster all the way to the City of London. It is a wide road with four lanes, often split into two separate directions. This road connects with many important bridges, from Westminster Bridge to Blackfriars Bridge.
How the Embankment was Built
The Embankment was built in two main sections. The first part was called the Victoria Embankment. The second part was the Chelsea Embankment. Even though they were built separately, people in London now see them as one continuous road. There is also a smaller road on the south side of the river, known as the Albert Embankment.
