The building that houses the Italian Embassy has a long and interesting past.
Building the Embassy's Home
The house was first built around 1728. It was part of a bigger plan by the Grosvenor family to develop the area around Grosvenor Square. It took about ten more years before someone bought the lease for the property.
Early Owners and Changes
The first important owner was the Earl of Malton. His family continued to lease the house for many years, right up until 1931. Over time, buildings need updates! In 1865, the Grosvenor estate asked for the house to be rebuilt. This made sure it stayed in good condition.
Italy Finds Its London Home
In 1931, Italy was looking for a permanent home for its embassy in London. They were granted a 200-year lease for the building. This deal was made with Hugh Grosvenor, 2nd Duke of Westminster. Italy paid £35,000 upfront and then £350 each year. Lord Gerald Wellesley was then hired to change the inside of the house. He made it perfect for an embassy, with offices and rooms for official events.

Besides the main embassy, Italy has several other important offices across London. These help with different tasks for Italian citizens and businesses.
