Emerson Albert Spratlen Etem (born June 16, 1992) is an American former professional ice hockey player. He played as a right winger. Emerson Etem is now a radio announcer for the Anaheim Ducks. He also helps own the Long Beach Shredders, a junior hockey team.

The Anaheim Ducks picked Etem in the first round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 29th player chosen overall. He also played for the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks. Etem stopped playing hockey professionally in 2020. After that, he became a coach and manager for junior hockey teams.

Emerson Etem's Family and Early Life

Emerson Etem comes from a family of amazing athletes. His family has a strong tradition in rowing. His mother, Patricia, was even on the U.S. Olympic rowing team. She was supposed to compete in the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. However, the U.S. boycotted those games, so she could not go.

Emerson's older brother, Martin, also rowed in college. He was a team captain at Syracuse University. After college, Martin became a top rower. He trained for the U.S. National Rowing Team. He placed third in the Olympic trials before the London Games.

Emerson also has an older sister named Elise. She was a very good swimmer. She was nationally ranked in the butterfly stroke from a young age. Elise swam for a year at University of California, Berkeley. Then, she joined the women's rowing team there. She became captain of her team, which won the Pac-12 championship.

Emerson Etem and his wife, Danette, have a son. He was born in 2016.

When Emerson was young, he played in the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. This was in 2004 and 2005. He played for a team from Los Angeles.

Emerson started playing roller hockey and then ice hockey. He followed his older brother, Martin, into the sport. When he was 14, Emerson moved to Faribault, Minnesota. He went to a special school called Shattuck-Saint Mary's. Many great hockey players have gone there.

At Shattuck-Saint Mary's, Emerson helped his team. In his first year, his Bantam team finished third in a national championship. The next year, he was the only sophomore on the Midget Minor AAA team. He helped them win their second national title in a row. This was a first for the school.

In 2008–09, Etem moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan. He joined the National Team Development Program (NTDP). This program helps train young hockey players for the future.

The Medicine Hat Tigers picked Etem in the 2007 Bantam Draft. This was for the Western Hockey League (WHL).

Playing Professional Hockey

Before the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Emerson Etem was ranked very high. But he was picked 29th overall by the Anaheim Ducks. He scored his first goal in the NHL on March 18, 2013. It was against Antti Niemi of the San Jose Sharks.

On June 27, 2015, Etem was traded to the New York Rangers. He played 19 games for the Rangers. He had 3 assists during that time. On January 8, 2016, the Rangers traded Etem to the Vancouver Canucks. He was happy to play for his old junior coach, Willie Desjardins, again. He scored his first goal for the Canucks on February 6, 2016. In 39 games with the Canucks, he scored 7 goals and had 5 assists.

On June 27, 2016, Etem signed a new contract with the Canucks. But he did not make the team for the next season. The Anaheim Ducks then picked him up on October 13, 2016. This meant he was back with the team that first drafted him. He played 3 games for the Ducks. Then he was sent to their minor league team, the San Diego Gulls. In his first game with the Gulls, he scored a goal. But he got a knee injury that needed surgery. This ended his season.

After his contract with the Ducks ended, Etem became a free agent. On July 5, 2017, he signed a contract with the Arizona Coyotes. On January 2, 2018, his contract with the Coyotes ended.

On January 14, 2018, Etem signed with HC Lugano in Switzerland. He played 5 games there. He then returned to North America. He tried out for the Los Angeles Kings in August 2018. He played well but was one of the last players cut from the team. He then joined the Ontario Reign, a minor league team. He played 9 games and scored 1 goal before leaving the team. He officially retired from playing hockey in 2020.

Emerson Etem's Career After Playing

After retiring from playing, Emerson Etem became a coach. For the 2020–21 season, he was the head coach of the Missoula Jr. Bruins. This is a junior ice hockey team in Missoula, Montana.

In 2021, Emerson and his wife, Danette, bought their own junior team. They moved the Anaheim Avalanche team to Long Beach, California. They renamed the team the Long Beach Shredders. Emerson is a part-owner, head coach, and general manager for the Shredders.

On July 20, 2023, the Anaheim Ducks hired Etem. He now works as a radio announcer for their games. He also helps create content for the Ducks' online stream.
